Global Peace Exchange

Ghana

In 2007, GPE sent 5 volunteers to work at the Liberian refugee settlement of Buduburam in Ghana. They delivered 2,000 de-worming treatments and provided vocational training opportunities to ex-child soldiers.

In 2008, GPE sent another group of volunteers from FSU and Santa Fe College to further develop vocational training opportunities and expand primary education capacities in the refugee camp and surrounding areas. During their time there, these volunteers worked at the Carolyn A. Miller Elementary School (CAMES) teaching English, math, and healthcare workshops. Volunteers also worked as teachers assistants to provide students with one-on-one instruction in the classroom and privately as tutors. Our volunteers also assisted in the Unite For Sight Clinic, working together to provide information on eye health and to screen local children for reading glasses and diseases of the eye.

The situation in Buduburam has deteriorated such that many refugees have been forced to repatriate back to Liberia. Future projects are therefore suspended for the time being.
